Photo Friday: Geeky cake edition

Way back in April, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best way to provide Kaylee with an Abby Cadabby birthday cake, as you may remember. When I finally found an Abby cake pan, Rob and I had a brief text-message conversation that he promptly forgot:
For whatever reason, I decided to take on this mission. Rob and I love the short-lived TV show "Firefly" and its accompanying movie "Serenity," so I relished the idea of making a Serenity cake for him. So I enlisted my mom, and we started brainstorming ideas for how to create a cake that would vaguely resemble the movie's logo:
My parents came over yesterday and my mom worked on my nieces' birthday cake -- one of them shares Rob's birthday, and the other's birthday is a few days earlier -- while I worked on Rob's. We had grand ideas about airbrushing that didn't really work out at all, and we couldn't figure out a way to write "Happy Birthday" in that Serenity-style font, but it could have been worse:
Now, if I could just figure out how to vacuum my floors more than once a month -- ok, once every six weeks -- I'll officially achieve Domestic Goddess Status.

The "Serenity-style font" is Papyrus – the same one used in Avatar.

That said, pretty goddamned snazzy. Are those screws and hull plating I see around the cake?
that's amazing! related to other posts: i also HATE our insurance system, and wish i didn't always feel compelled to ask healthcare providers: "is my insurance going to cover that?" and i hope kaylee's eye heals very quickly!
Yep, I did figure that out. I had a logo that I'd written "Happy Birthday" on with Papyrus, but we couldn't come up with a way to do that in icing.

Thank you. :) And yeah, you just sort of assume certain things will be covered. Like, say, if your baby won't stop throwing up.
FANTASTIC JOB!! I bet Rob said that it is the best birthday cake he has ever had.
So impressed! I miss Firefly, and would totally have found a Mal figurine- Not for the cake,though. Maybe just to put on my nightstand.

You kicked some serious ass with this cake ... you do realize, of course, that we will now clamor for bigger and better cakes for every event from now on? :)
My mom and I have decided we're making everybody's cakes for the rest of the year, whether they like it or not. We'll try to top it.
